Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry
This has got to be one of my favorite books! Here are just a couple things I learned from it….
Racism is an evil that will tear up a person’s soul and always end up hurting you more than the person or people you are trying to hurt. In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, you can almost feel what it is like to be put down and socially scorned. You can almost feel the hate of some whites who treated African-Americans as if they were less than dogs. You can almost feel the pain that African-American’s felt as their pride was crushed and destroyed. But I can not pretend to know what it feels like without actually living it. Neither can you.
I am regrettably sorry that my great country, America, has ever allowed such criminal acts and injustices to go abroad and unrestrained in the very heart of her so-called “free” soil. And if you are out there, if you feel some slight inferiority towards any other race, read this book. And think, really think, what your reasons are for this mentality. Switch shoes with them and try to see how they see and feel how they feel. Tell me what you think then.
No matter what race a person is, they are still a person. No matter how different they look, speak, or act, each is still a living human being. This book was an excellent fictional work which I admire greatly.
Anger will never help a situation, it will only make things worse. You have to learn to forgive people, even if they are people who hate you for simply being who you are. Especially those kind of people. We need to learn from Christ and love our enemies, as He loved us.
